Yet I somehow found myself at the popular girls’ parties in my quirky, self-designed, hand-made outfits when everyone else wore jeans.
As a teenager, skipping classes to make my jaunts across the road to the boys’ school music room was not so much a protest against the broken system, as a deep yearning to express my true self in a space that fostered individuality, creativity, curiosity, questioning the rules…
I found myself enlivened in a space where I finally felt like me. This was in vast contrast to the other classes, where I felt muzzled, unseen... In silent rows, despising the robots in front of me... Following prescriptive curriculums, Uncompromisingly designed to limit us to our manufacture date, And keep our potential finite.
I was sought-out by curious minds from other ponds. Gaining the attention of a mammoth tech company also passionate about innovative education, I was first noticed during a tour of my school… I was then propelled into an adventure that placed me and my unconventional viewpoints in the eyes, the pockets and the stages of like-minded educators. Commissioned to write a book about leveraging technology to empower creativity, curiosity, critical thinking and collaboration in the classroom. Invited to speak to worldwide audiences on the very things that made me an outlier within the system. The validation I received from outside the system, when my ways were often frowned upon within it, gave me the push, the confidence and the experience I needed to do what I do now… with you.
The boxes in which we must contain ourselves. The lines in which we must walk. The roles in which we must behave. When you choose to see past the walls and structures containing and constraining your wisdom…. you get to break through the looking glass. On the other side, your adventure awaits. And we get to dream it into existence exactly as we dare, my rebel heart. No one can brick us in.
